GREENE Consortium Advances Sustainable Magnet Technology in Zaragoza, Spain

On 27th and 28th May, consortium partners of the EU project GREENE gathered for their third in person project meeting at the University of Zaragoza to review progress and discuss next steps in the development of advanced Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets. These magnets play a critical role in powering high-tech products essential for a green energy future like e-motors and wind turbines. The hosting institute, the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA), CSIC-Universidad de Zaragoza, is a key partner in the project responsible for the development of advanced characterization techniques, boasting state-of-the-art transmission electron microscopy facilities.

FisMat 2025 – Advances on Permanent Magnets for Sustainable Solutions: Towards the European Green Deal

Where: San Giobbe Economics Campus, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy

When: July 7–11, 2025

FisMat is a large Italian conference on condensed matter physics. At this year’s event, EU projects GREENE, BEETHOVEN and MagNEO are jointly organising a thematic workshop titled “Advances in Permanent Magnets for Sustainable Solutions: Towards the European Green Deal”, focused on recent progress in permanent magnet technologies and their role in supporting the European Union’s climate and sustainability goals.

The workshop aims to be a forum for discussion and knowledge exchange on the latest advances in permanent magnet research, covering the development of conventional REE magnets, as well as the design of novel REE-free materials with the potential to enable a partial substitution. Discussions will span both experimental approaches and multi-level simulation perspectives.

EU Project GREENE kicks off

EU Project GREENE kicks off

On 4th and 5th June, a consortium of 15 European partners led by the Slovenian Jožef Stefan Institute kicked off GREENE, short for SINGLE-GRAIN RE-ENGINEERED Nd-Fe-B PERMANENT MAGNETS, an EU project with a funding of €8 million. Over a four-year period, partners will develop high-energy Nd-Fe-B based magnets, innovatively re-engineering them at the single grain level to minimize the overall Rare Earth (RE) content, thus reducing environmental impact and supply dependencies for these critical raw materials.
